Get Ready For A Lot More Tweetstorms Thanks To Twitter's New Tool 1/X

Twitter

Get ready for a lot more tweetstorms in your Twitter timeline.

Twitter is releasing a tool that makes it easier to write and send tweetstorms — or multi-tweet "threads" — to users worldwide, the company said Tuesday.

The tool, which can be accessed by hitting a "+" next to the Tweet button in Twitter's compose window, allows people to write a bunch of tweets and post them simultaneously in a single thread. The tool will roll out in the coming weeks across iOS, Android and the web.

Twitter views tweetstorms — which are used for everything from magnificent storytelling to nonsensical rants — as "an innovative way to present a train of thought." Intriguingly, the person who popularized the format, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen no longer tweets (Andreessen Horowitz is an investor in BuzzFeed).

BuzzFeed News gave the tweetstorm tool a spin on Monday, using it to thread the lyrics of a world-renowned musical number. Here's what it looked like:

When the thread went live, it was met with seemingly universal approval:

Someone even turned it into a Twitter Moment:

Twitter was born as a network with brevity at its core, but the company has moved away from that foundation in recent months, expanding its character limit from 140 characters to 280 last month, and quickly following it with a tweetstorm tool.

The early data on the longer tweets shows that people seem to like them. And though Twitter declined to tell BuzzFeed News whether threads receive more engagement than solo tweets, it's releasing the tool after weeks of testing, indicating it's happy with the results.
